I hope you tried a sandwich from Primanti Brothers while you were there. Medical studies have shown that a Primanti Brothers sandwich will take 17 minutes off your life.

I looked at ALL of the photos taken on your Clark Street Safari, and I certainly enjoyed my vicarious walk with you! You mentioned that people questioned your making this trek when it was in the planning stages. I was wondering if people asked you about it as you walked, especially since you were taking lots of pictures. Maybe you should have the Trib do a feature article on your adventure!

Steph,

I can totally hear your voice as you explain the strategies, and totally picture the expression on your face after it all starts... ;)

Hope all is well in Chicago! It's not bad in southern Oregon.

Thanks for your report about your good experience with Fantasy Travel. My wife and I are planning a trip with them and we got the same note you did about sending photocopies of our credit card, passport, etc. I had reservations about that (and about having actual reservations in Greece!), but your tale gives me confidence that Fantasy is for real.

This hits on a lot of things that I already devote too much time to wondering about...the question remains, for example, how to distinguish between derivation and inspiration, cliché and class. Where is that Quality line drawn?

Just catching up on your postings tonight as we watch "Carlito's Way"...hard to do both at once . I think you're on to something in this piece, and I am very glad you like language and recognize its importance, both written and spoken. I love the conversations you, Stephanie, and I have. We can talk about everything it seems. And I love to read what you write. When I do, I get to know you more and more.

Comment on On Chicago and the Midwest by Spencer

Wooo, we can leave comments now.

I just wanted to say that I think your definition of Midwest is too broad. I think you can easily divide the Greater Midwest into the Upper Midwest and the Southern Midwest. The Upper Midwest tends toward the liberal (with the other traits you described) and includes Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, and Minnesota. The Southern Midwest tends toward the conservative and has your other states. With that further division, I think Chicago fits very nicely into the mentality of the Upper Midwest.
