Project Firebird, Phase One

Raymond Carver, Ardent Morris, Michael Torrence and the Special Ops team fly to Greece. At the Greek-Albanian border, they undertake the dress of college students on a European tour and putter into Albanian in beat up Volkswagon vans. Small arms fire fills the air around them. Stray bullets hit their vehicles twice, but otherwise the trip is uneventful.

Once at the compound, the team encounters minimal resistance, being attacked only by some extremely aggressive, overgrown Dobermans on steroids. After a cautious entry into the compound, breaking into a large library filled with sequencing files on the genome of felis domesticus, and raiding some laboratories belonging to some Russian scientists, the team discovers evidence that the local network is still online and that people have been in the facility recently (as in that day) eventhough they have not encountered a single living soul. Growing frustrated with raiding empty laboratories, the team attacks the dormitories next where the odor of baklava and spaghetti are redolent. Discovering cooling pasta and signs of a hasty departure in one of the rooms, the team breaks into other rooms, trying to find lab notebooks and other research paraphenalia, though Michael Torrence appears to be happy ripping out hard drives from personal computers and stowing them in his backpack. Ardent Morris hears footsteps on the floor above. She rushes upstairs and chases a fleeing man to the parking lot. However the man has a huge lead on her and gets away eventhough she tries to shoot him. The rest of the team, meanwhile, investigates the man's room, getting part of his burnt notebook. Eventually, they discover a large suite on the top floor of the dormitories belonging to Dr. Felicity Allen. In her extremely ransacked and disheveled suite, they find more pieces from burned notebooks, cat hair, cat toys, a scratching post, and children's toys.

Further investigation produces evidence that the facility is empty of people, appearing to be abandoned. People seemed to have begun evacuating the facility as early as a week ago. They discover a cryogenic facility filled with frozen cat bodies, a vivarium filled with empty cages but a few live cats wandering the room, and a large computer room filled with supercomputers and regular graphics workstations. Michael Torrence downloads every piece of data to tape, Ardent Morris bags both a live cat and a dead cat as specimens. The remaining cats are set free to fend for themselves in Albania. The teams then heads back to Greece.
